When it comes to exercises that intimidate women, the bench press is probably #1. I'm here to tell you that you can do the bench press, and you can do it in a way that works your whole body. I've found in my own life that confidence in the gym translates to confidence in your day-to-day life, so take a look at my pictures and steps below to learn how you can confidently try the bench press.
Gotta love that double chin.
I'm not on the standard bench press machine here due to what was available in my gym, but as you can see I still used a heavy weight (30 lbs.). If you don't feel like you can bench the bar (45 lbs., which is what I usually use), I would suggest using barbells on a standard weight bench until you work up to 45 lbs. Remember, lifting heavy weights will NOT make you bulk up.
Start with feet flat on the floor, knees bent at 90 degrees, glutes and abs squeezing in, shoulder blades tucked under you, holding the bar right above your chest. You want to squeeze your muscles and engage your entire body in order to protect your back and make the workout as effective as possible.
Slowly press the bar up, being sure to keep your glutes and abs tight.
Extend your arms all the way and then slowly lower the bar back towards your chest. Try to get the bar as close to your chest as possible - only coming part of the way down will short-change your workout.
I'm writing this post as they announce the result of the Presidential election. I can't tell you how happy I am that this is all over after two long years of hearing about little else on all forms of media. I'm generally not one to pass judgment on how others spend their money (I'm sure there are plenty of people who would raise an eyebrow at how much money I spend at J. Crew and Lululemon), but it almost makes me sick to my stomach to think of the unbelievable amount of money that was spent on this election. When there are so many people in this world who do not have their basic needs met every day, I just cannot understand spending tens of millions upon tens of millions on...television attack ads? Here's hoping that everyone in this country can put their expendable income into something worthwhile (and maybe a few pretty things as well) in the near future.
Rant over - here's to a post-election world! I hope everyone has a wonderful Wednesday!
