Dress Well: Rain Booties

Back in December, we went through a string of weeks here in San Francisco where it rained every single day. To brave the rain, I broke out my trusty J. Crew yellow rain boots that I had had since my freshman year of college...only to discover that they had holes in them. Not exactly what you look for in a rain boot. I also quickly tired of hauling what felt like 10 pounds of rubber to and from work along with an extra pair of shoes to wear when I arrived. I decided it was time for an upgrade.

All the rain boot trouble resulted in me adding these little rain booties to my Christmas list, and my mother-in-law was so kind to get them for me. Starting December 25th, I looked forward to seeing rain in the forecast...except it didn't rain here in SF for the entire month of January!

We got some wet weather this past weekend, and I was overjoyed to finally get a chance to wear these beauties (and experience my favorite kind of weather, of course). I went out of my way to step in puddles and just generally frolic in the rain...because who knows when it will make another appearance!

DSC_7238Did everyone have a good weekend? I certainly did. I came home on Friday night and managed to cook a dinner constituting entirely of ingredients that already happened to be in my house (next stop: Chopped). On Saturday we had a delicious brunch at Padrecito with two of our favorite friends and their adorable, adorable baby (what's more fun than that?). On Saturday night we had dinner with a group of friends and then had a great time attending an American Heart Association event. A busy Friday + Saturday meant taking Sunday easy, sleeping in, reading magazines, doing chores, and cooking one more big dinner (this delicious recipe from Bon Appétit)

I'm closing out the weekend by half-watching the Grammy Awards as I write this post. As usual, they seem unnecessarily long and peppered with performances and speeches that seem unnecessarily, goofily earnest (there's something about outsized earnestness that makes me physically uncomfortable). However, if the Grammys didn't take themselves overly seriously, they wouldn't be the Grammys. As always, there's a certain amount of comfort found in predictability.

I've got a bit of an eventful week coming up: I'll be spending 24 hours in Dallas in the middle of the week for a meeting with a client. More about it in a post on Wednesday or Thursday!

Have a great Monday.

Dress Well: A Piece of Flair

J. Crew puffer vest (no longer available, sadly), J. Crew shirt (white, blush, and green versions still available and on major sale!), Citizens of Humanity jeans, Steve Madden booties, Anthropologie bag (old), Ray-Ban aviators

This winter J. Crew seemed to be all about taking a standard button-down shirt and adding flair to it in some unexpected way. Although button-down shirts tend to look overly masculine on me (thanks for nothing, broad shoulders), the pocket appliqués on this one pull it back towards the feminine realm. Plus, it's roomy and comfortable, so wearing the pullover + stretchy skinny jeans makes you feel like you're getting away with wearing pajamas in public. And you know I'm all for that.

Starting about a month from now, my husband and I will embark on a whirlwind of weekend trips, with something almost every weekend for over a month. Until then, we are taking all of our weekends nice and slow. This past weekend was the epitome of that strategy. We stayed in Friday night, ordered a pizza, drank a bottle of wine, and chatted until I feel asleep at about 9:45. On Saturday we slept in and then walked up to our regular brunch spot, La Boulange. The pictures in this post were taken on Saturday afternoon on our way to a fun happy hour with a few of my co-workers. After the happy hour, we saw The Theory of Everything, which was great (more on that in my annual Oscars post, of course). Sunday was low-key too, with an early morning walk, brunch with a lovely friend, a long afternoon nap, and a night spent cooking, cleaning, and getting ready for the week (which I always enjoy in its own, quiet way). All told, it was a perfectly relaxed weekend and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Maybe it was all the sleep I got this past weekend, but for the first time in a long time I feel ready to jump into the upcoming week. Isn't that nice way to kick off your Monday? I think so. Have a great day.

Dress Well: Day Owl

J. Crew vest, J. Crew blouse, Citizens of Humanity jeans, Rag & Bone booties, Michael Kors watch, Rebecca Minkoff bag, Ray-Ban sunglasses

You know, I thought I had worn this shirt on the blog before...but I can't seem to find the post. So maybe I'm imagining things! Regardless of whether or not I've said it before, I LOVE this button-down. The mascot at my alma mater, Rice University, was an owl, so I feel especially spirited any time I don this shirt. What's not to love about being able to show school spirit in a subtle way?

Is there anything better than four-day weeks? I really don't think so. This one flew by, and I'm looking forward to another fun weekend spent with my husband. Hopefully all of you have something fun lined up. I'll see you back here next week!

Dress Well: Going for the Gold

J. Crew cardigan, Madewell sweater, Citizens of Humanity jeans, Rag&Bone booties, Madewell necklace, Rebecca Minkoff bag, Ray-Ban sunglasses

Yeah, I've got Olympics on the brain.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a gold medal-caliber sweater. My mom got it for me in 2010 from J. Crew factory for a Christmas card photo - at the time, I was incredibly skeptical. Gold sweater? Not my thing.

I can't tell you how wrong I was about it. Time and time again it's the perfect off-beat item to mix up an otherwise cookie-cutter outfit. Over the years, I've learned that some of the very best clothes I own are clothes that others picked out as gifts for me - sometimes an outsider's perspective is exactly what your closet needs. That, or I'm just not that great at picking out interesting clothes. That could be it.

Speaking of clothes that others picked out for me - this Madewell sweater falls into that category as well! My mother-in-law got it for me for Christmas and I love it - it's wonderfully soft and comfortable (not to mention on sale now).
