Eat Well: BLT-tastic

I usually like to cook a big dinner on Sunday nights - inevitably, each weekend feels like it should be honored with a closing ceremony to celebrate another great few days spent in this beautiful city. Although this past weekend was fantastic, my husband and I felt like keeping things a bit more low-key this past Sunday night. Rather than grilling steak, roasting chicken, or trying my hand at a new pasta recipe, we decided to make BLT sandwiches.

I was inspired by last June's issue of Bon Appétit, where they featured several unexpected but delicious BLT toppings. Although all the toppings in the article sounded good, we decided to stick with adding avocado (because, of course...) and chipotle mayonnaise (mayonnaise + chopped chipotle peppers). The result was delicious - BLTs will undoubtedly be a cooking staple for us going forward, both on lazy Sundays and on weeknights when we're pressed for time.

As a side, I put together some fresh peas from the farmer's market + burrata with a drizzle of olive oil and lemon zest. Who doesn't love eating their greens alongside the most delicious cheese ever invented?

DSC_3276We've got a fun week to look forward to, which is good, because hopefully it will limit my sadness of this weekend being over.

It's funny - I always feel like every weekend we spend here can't beat the one before it, and then it inevitably does. We had a great time this weekend staying in on Friday night, making mini-pizzas, drinking wine, and watching Orange is the New Black (so good, by the way). Saturday we enjoyed the sunshine while eating barbecue at 4505 Meats on Divisadero. Having a lunch of brisket + coleslaw + a roll made me feel, just for a second, like I was spending a weekend in Austin.  We then grabbed Bi-Rite ice cream and walked to Alamo Square Park, where we sat on the grass, soaked in the sun, and marveled at the Painted Ladies. We followed that up with dinner with friends at Nopalito, then a trip to a little coffee shop/bar to watch a friend of a friend perform some of his music.

The entire weekend felt worthy of a movie - memorable, scenic, and happy. Which doesn't mean that next weekend won't be even better - on Friday we're flying to Cincinnati for the wedding of two of our close friends, and I couldn't be more excited to get to celebrate with them and see old friends from school. Life is awfully good.

Eat Well: Blueberry Bars

This past weekend, I got an overwhelming urge to bake things. I have no idea why. While I like baking, I generally don't spend much of my free time on it - usually I'd rather go buy dessert someplace than slave away making it myself. But something about this past weekend made me really excited to get in the kitchen - maybe it was the start of football season, or the beautiful weather, or the fact that Labor Day means that fall is upon us. And fall means home-baked treats, right?

The first thing I decided to bake were these amazing-looking blueberry bars that I found on Pinterest (recipe here). I was hoping to recreate one of my all-time favorite pies, a blueberry crumble creation from Royers in Round Top, without having to go through all the trouble of, you know, actually making a pie. And let me tell you, these suckers come pretty darn close. I'd like to make these again and mix the dough a bit less - I should have kept bigger chunks of butter - and add oats to the crumbly part. But either way, these beauties are delicious for breakfast, lunch, or dinner (or dessert).

Eat Well: Scones

DSC_8916And just when you thought I had tired of giving you guys breakfast posts...

I've been off my breakfast-cooking game recently. These past couple weekends, rather than whipping up fancy breakfasts like I used to, I've been resorting to quick bowls of oatmeal before heading out the door on a morning walk or for morning errands. However, this past weekend my husband and I decided to get back to our old ways. I decided to make this scones recipe from the most recent issue of Bon Appétit - they were the perfect light, fluffy, not-too-unhealthy complement to our standard scrambled eggs and bacon. Even better, they took less than 30 minutes to make - I highly recommend them.

DSC_8936It was a momentous day in my household today - after almost two years of braving crazy San Francisco street parking, we finally got a spot in our apartment building's garage. This may seem boring to you, but it is so exciting for us. Less hours spent parking means more hours spent eating and sleeping - who wouldn't enjoy that tradeoff?

Eat Well: Oven Roasted Tomatoes with Burrata Cheese

This past Saturday we were invited to a dinner party at a friend's apartment where they asked us to bring an appetizer that could double as a side. After one of my friends suggested that I bring a caprese salad, it occurred to me that this was the perfect opportunity to try oven-roasting some tomatoes. I followed Victoria's instructions for the tomato base of my take on caprese. In addition to seasoning my tomatoes with salt and pepper, I used Herbs de Provence, an herb blend that I already had in my spice drawer. I then topped the roasted tomatoes with burrata cheese (you can find it at Whole Foods or you can use regular mozzarella), chopped fresh basil, a drizzle of olive oil, and salt and pepper. I think they came out very well, if I do say so myself - and the whole dish was so easy!

DSC_7399I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. It was definitely a good one over here. Despite getting a pretty bad sunburn after reading on the roof yesterday afternoon (when will I learn?) I really enjoyed the warm weather and good meals with good friends. There's really no reason for me to lament the passing of the weekend, though - this week is my last week at Bank of America, I'm starting a new CrossFit class today, and I'm headed to Houston for a friend's wedding at the end of the week! With so much excitement packed into five days, I know I'm in for a wonderful week. I hope you are too - happy Monday!
