Dress Well: Gingham Gloom

J. Crew shirt (old), Paige Denim jeans, Chie Mihara wedges (I swear, Lord & Taylor is GIVING these things away), super old necklace - designer unknown, J. Crew leopard bracelet (old), J. Crew pavé bracelet, Tory Burch bag (updated version)

I'm going to level with you - I just wasn't feeling that "spark" yesterday.

I really felt like everything was working against me - it was Monday, I was woken up at 5:45 in the morning by the world's loudest garbage truck on our street, and it was cold, and gloomy, and windy, and just generally depressing outside. I looked in my closet, and EVERYTHING felt outdated. You know how those mornings go.

In an attempt to change it up, I grabbed this gingham shirt. I've read a few blogs where the girls have put together really cute outfits with gingham shirts lately, and I thought maybe if I put this shirt on, inspiration will strike. But it didn't. Instead, I felt like my shirt was taunting me all day - it's so summery, but the weather here was the definition of June Gloom.

Maybe inspiration will strike later this week. Maybe. DSC_2662

In case you don't believe me that the weather was gross: here's me doing battle with the wind:

DSC_2660Cute, right?

Two quick pop culture things - I just started B.J. Novak's book One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories and I'm really enjoying it so far. The last book I read was a dense, heavy, and just generally unenjoyable book, so this is a nice change of pace.

Also, is anyone out there watching Fargo? I can't believe how good it's gotten - we're really looking forward to the episode tonight. Although there have been so many great moments, the Key & Peele cameo in the last episode may have been one of our favorite things to date. I'm very curious to see how the whole thing ends - they have truly defied our expectations up to this point.

Here's hoping the gloom stays away - have a great day.

Dress Well: Feeling Festive

J. Crew dress (old), J. Crew coat, Birds on a Wire necklace c/o, Coach sunglasses (old)

Despite the fact that this dress is sleeveless, wearing it always makes it feel like the holidays. Maybe it's because this dress was gifted to me for Christmas last year, or maybe it's because velvet as a fabric seems inextricably tied to the most wonderful time of the year. Either way, putting it on puts the Christmas season on my mind.

This past weekend felt like opening weekend of the holidays. On Saturday night we packed a bunch of friends at our apartment for a Cards Against Humanity party. We literally fit as many people into our 700 square foot apartment as we possibly could - every seat we have in the house was occupied. There's something about hosting friends, playing games, and having way too much food on hand that feels undeniably festive. I had a wonderful, wonderful time and can't wait to have everyone over again soon!

DSC_2839One more thing I wanted to share from my weekend - on Sunday my husband and I went to go see About Time, which is a new British romantic comedy. Now, I am NOT one of those girls who is a sucker for any romantic comedy - I hold my love stories to a high standard. I went into the movie a little bit skeptical, but came out thoroughly charmed. The movie was very sweet, and I couldn't get enough of the overall aesthetic of creaky hallways and rooms filled with books that marks every great British romantic comedy. If you want to take a break from all the bleak movies out there these days - Gravity12 Years a SlaveCaptain Phillips - and just enjoy yourself for two hours, go catch About Time. You won't regret it.

Okay, sales pitch over! Time to press on with my week. Four days from today I will be headed to L.A. for a little pre-birthday trip that has really snuck up on me. I love this time of the year for everything there is to look forward to - L.A. in less than a week, Texas for Thanksgiving in three, and Christmas just a few weeks after that! Life is good, life is good.

Dress Well: Double Print // Double Duty

J. Crew blouse, Paige jeans, Steve Madden flats, Madewell necklace, Rebecca Minkoff bag, Coach sunglasses

I wore this shirt out on both Friday and Saturday night this weekend. I'm not even ashamed about it. When I received it in the mail last week (I ordered it when J. Crew had their site-wide 25% off sale - score!) I wasn't sure how I felt about it. After all, it takes me a little while to warm up to prints. But now that I've worn it not once but twice, I've decided I'm in love - the simple, geometric print is perfect for those of us who prefer solid colors, and I love the detailing on the neck. I'm sure you'll see this beauty replayed many more times in the future.

When we were taking these photos, we were in an all-out war with the wind. Every night in San Francisco the fog rolls in, and God help you if you decide to attempt to take pictures during that period. I think my face in the photo below sums up pretty much everything I feel about the wind:

Did everyone has a good weekend? Mine was fantastic. Get this - it was WARM in San Francisco this weekend! I know! That never happens! Believe it or not, we got to enjoy 80 degree weather on Saturday and Sunday, which means that I spent four to five hours on our rooftop deck, reading and napping and just generally enjoying the warmth. Also, we enjoyed what may have been one of our most gluttonous weekends yet - on Friday night we went to Aziza with friends, on Saturday morning we went to brunch at Universal Cafe, on Saturday night we went to dinner at Sir and Star up in Marin, on Sunday morning we went to Blackwood for brunch, and on Sunday night we picked up pizza from Za. I'm not lying when I say that the diet starts today (my waistline and my bank account demand it) - you'll hear more about that on Wednesday, of course.

Until then, have a great Monday!

Dress Well: Work Safari

Dress from a boutique in Houston I can't remember, Steve Madden flats (similar), J. Crew bracelet, Tory Burch bag (similar), Coach sunglasses (similar)

Whenever I wear shirts or dresses with two button pockets on the front, I feel a bit like I'm dressing for a safari. The funny thing is, I've actually been on a work safari - one year ago my then-manager brought me and my coworkers to this awesome place in Sonoma where they raise African wildlife and allow groups to go on "safaris" around the property. It was awesome. Even though I did not have a safari to attend when I wore this dress earlier this week, sometimes I feel like you should approach every day like you're going to encounter a jungle.

Happy Friday! Today I will be flying solo at work - the girl who has been training me all day, every day since I started is off to Mexico. Here's hoping I'm up to the solo challenge!

I hope you have a great weekend, and I'll see you back here on Monday :)
