Dress Well: Building Blocks

J. Crew sweater, Paige jeans (similar), J. Crew flats, J. Crew necklace, J. Crew bangle, Rebecca Minkoff bag, Coach sunglasses

Tuesday was one of those days where I just couldn't get an outfit to work. I tried on about 10 different things (despite the fact that I did NOT have 10 extra minutes) and felt unhappy and uncomfortable in everything. I don't pretend to be a creative or artistic person - I'm not. Rather, I'm a person who likes looking good, recognizes the power of looking good, and attempts to distill "looking good" into a formula. That formula often makes me push the limits of what comes naturally to me when it comes to clothes, but sometimes that formula is just that: a formula. When in doubt, I go with solid-color tops, big necklaces, my favorite jeans, and tan flats (most of it sourced through J. Crew, obviously). It's not exciting, it's not revolutionary, but it works. And it's comfortable. If I didn't have this blog to push me outside my comfort zone every once in awhile, you would catch me in an outfit almost identical to this one every single day.

The fact that it's already Thursday is kind of blowing my mind. Time flies when you have plenty to do at work, I suppose (and plenty of podcasts to listen to on your commute. And plenty of TV shows to watch at home at night with your husband). Here's hoping that the rest of the days we have left before leaving for Florida fly by just as quickly as these past couple have! And then let's hope that once we get to Florida, time grinds to a halt. It works like that, right?

Dress Well: Maroon and Gold

J. Crew sweater, J. Crew shorts, Anthropologie necklace (old), J. Crew bracelet, Rocket Dog boots, Anthropologie bag (similar), Coach sunglasses

It took me at least an hour to decide what I was going to wear to Beer Bike last Saturday.

The requirements were many and varied. I needed something that was cool enough to be comfortable in 80-degree weather, which is typical for Houston in March, but also warm enough to wear in 60-degree weather, which is how cold it can be if it rains (and it did). I needed to be wearing comfortable shoes because I would be on my feet for hours and, most importantly, it needed to incorporate maroon, because that's the color of my residential college, Brown. By the time I put this outfit together, I had almost every item in my closet strewn about my room. When I finally thought of pairing these pieces, I felt like I had solved a very difficult equation. And I'm no stranger to math, so I do not make that analogy lightly.

This outfit ended up being perfect for the day - it kept me at just the right temperature, my feet were comfortable, and my college pride was evident. Now, if only it would get warm enough here in San Francisco to wear jean shorts, well, ever...

It's supposed to rain this weekend, and I could not be more excited about it. After a long week of work, I could not be more ready to spend two straight days sitting on my couch, enjoying the Apple TV that my husband picked up for us earlier this week. And while I'm sitting on my couch, I really don't want the pesky sun hanging out outside my window, making me feel guilty for acting like a sloth. So rain, rain, come my way! I'll see you guys back on Monday :)

Dress Well: A Night at the Theater

Club Monaco blouse (similar), Club Monaco skirt (old; love this one [paneling!] and this one [pleats!]), Danskin tights (similar), Sam Edelman booties (on sale!), Rebecca Minkoff bag

When my husband and I headed to the theater two weekends ago, I jumped at the chance to wear this Club Monaco skirt that my mom got me for Christmas. Since San Francisco is so casual, I rarely find myself at an event dressy enough for silky skirt. However, I absolutely love the pleating and the zipper detail on this little beauty, so I'm always on the lookout for a dressy occasion on which to bust it out!

DSC_3858I had to stay late at work last night (remember that to-do list I put off on Tuesday?) but there was no way a few more hours spent in a cubicle were going to get me down - today I'm headed to my hometown of Houston, Texas to reunite with SO many good friends from college at an annual event (more details on that tomorrow!) AND to celebrate my mom's birthday with all four of my siblings. With such an awesome long weekend in store, I was practically too excited to sleep last night! Stories and outfit photos from my fun-filled weekend will be coming next week, I promise :)

Have a great Thursday!
