Dress Well: Back to Business

This blog post title has layers, man!

It's a Tuesday after a long weekend, so this morning I am {begrudgingly} back to business. However, I must admit that my re-entry to the working world after an extended weekend is not so bad--I'm working from home today because I have a client meeting here in San Francisco this afternoon. I will then be going to a work dinner at my favorite restaurant, so really this workday is as close to a weekend day as a workday could possibly get.

Speaking of being back to business, my business meeting in Dallas last week gave me the opportunity to pull out this old J. Crew dress, heralding my {brief} return to business casual. While I miss wearing pencil skirts, tailored dresses, and button-down blouses to work exactly zero percent, I will say that slipping into business casual clothing every once in awhile makes you feel powerful. I've also decided that that I no longer aspire to "look like a million bucks" when getting dressed up for work events. Instead, my aim from here on out will be to dress like someone to whom you would feel comfortable giving a million bucks. In my estimation, this dress is one of those outfits. (Although here in Silicon Valley the million-dollar outfit generally consists of cargo shorts and flip-flops. Maybe I should try that.)

Dress Well: Serious Summer

Yesterday I had a LONG list of things to accomplish at work, and I thought that dressing like a businesswoman (a very casual businesswoman, but still a businesswoman) would help me focus. And you know what? I was totally right. Instead of dressing for the job I wanted, I dressed for the productivity I wanted - maybe there's something to be said for the role of slightly uncomfortable clothes at work. If you aren't comfortable, you most likely want to leave sooner, and when you want to leave sooner, you get your work done faster, right? I feel like someone has probably written a psychology paper about this before.

Thankfully, I was able to clear a lot of things off of my to-do list yesterday....still somehow didn't seem to put a dent in today's to-do list. But that's okay! I've got lots of fun things to look forward to this weekend - dinner with friends, a baby shower, time spent with my husband, and naps. Lots of naps. As I always say - I lead an exciting life.

Have a great weekend!

Dress Well: Gingham Gloom

J. Crew shirt (old), Paige Denim jeans, Chie Mihara wedges (I swear, Lord & Taylor is GIVING these things away), super old necklace - designer unknown, J. Crew leopard bracelet (old), J. Crew pavé bracelet, Tory Burch bag (updated version)

I'm going to level with you - I just wasn't feeling that "spark" yesterday.

I really felt like everything was working against me - it was Monday, I was woken up at 5:45 in the morning by the world's loudest garbage truck on our street, and it was cold, and gloomy, and windy, and just generally depressing outside. I looked in my closet, and EVERYTHING felt outdated. You know how those mornings go.

In an attempt to change it up, I grabbed this gingham shirt. I've read a few blogs where the girls have put together really cute outfits with gingham shirts lately, and I thought maybe if I put this shirt on, inspiration will strike. But it didn't. Instead, I felt like my shirt was taunting me all day - it's so summery, but the weather here was the definition of June Gloom.

Maybe inspiration will strike later this week. Maybe. DSC_2662

In case you don't believe me that the weather was gross: here's me doing battle with the wind:

DSC_2660Cute, right?

Two quick pop culture things - I just started B.J. Novak's book One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories and I'm really enjoying it so far. The last book I read was a dense, heavy, and just generally unenjoyable book, so this is a nice change of pace.

Also, is anyone out there watching Fargo? I can't believe how good it's gotten - we're really looking forward to the episode tonight. Although there have been so many great moments, the Key & Peele cameo in the last episode may have been one of our favorite things to date. I'm very curious to see how the whole thing ends - they have truly defied our expectations up to this point.

Here's hoping the gloom stays away - have a great day.
